Back in the office!

August 15th, 2011 by Screen Interaction

The Screen Interaction office is now full with people again after a couple of weeks of vacation. The summer sun seem to have treated us all really nice and at the office a lot of new exciting things takes place.

We’re just about to finish the development of an interactive children book based on the Swedish best-seller ”Wilda Wilmas Pruttar” by Lullaby publishing. End-user testing with children from the target group has resulted in some new ideas and updates. The iPad application will soon be submitted to iTunes AppStore and we will publish a case study with the evaluation when it’s gone live! We thank Fotios, Fredrik, Leah and Patrik at Screen Interaction for an excellent job on this project!

One of our internal project ”Reseräkning” was ported for Android HoneyComb Tablets and BlackBerry. The Google HoneyComb interaction model was of course applied! Thank you Emil and Joacim for great work on Reseräkning!

We’re also working on a new web portal for people who want to contract UX Designers, Interaction Designers or Usability Experts. The site ranks, sorts and list all the available agencies in this field in Sweden and contains a blog administrated by the agencies together that will highlight news and trends from the Interaction Design world. The site is in beta-testing right now and we expect it to go live later this fall. Keep your eyes for more information about the site soon! Thank you Teresia and Wisam, keep up the great work!

Right now we’re starting up a couple of new, interesting projects that we will work on during Q4 to continue to develop our expertise in user experience, application development and design for mobile devices.

Screen Interaction wish everyone a great week-end and hope to hear from you soon!

Free-to-play Revenue Overtakes Premium Revenue

July 7th, 2011 by Screen Interaction

Free-to-play games are taking over Apple’s App Store, based on data released today from mobile analytics firm Flurry.

About 65 % of the revenue from the top 100 grossing games in the App Store in the U.S. came from the free-to-play business model, where a user plays for free and can buy virtual goods with real money. For only six months ago, only 39 % of the revenue from the top 100 games were free-to-play.

In the old paid world of video games, success was measured by multiplying the number of units sold by the unit price, the traditional retail model. In the new world of digital games distribution, it’s all about how many players you can keep engaged with your free game, followed by how many compelling spending opportunities you can provide them.

The power of free-to-play is that more people will likely try out a new game, and revenue grows since those larger numbers of players can spend different amounts based on how engaged they are. Some players will spend tens of thousands of dollars in a game that they really like.

Flurry data shows that the number of people who spend money in a free game ranges from 0.5 percent to 6 percent depending on the quality of the game and its core mechanics. Although this means that more than 90 percent of players will not spend a single penny, it also means that players who love a game spend much more than the 99 cents that is the usual price for a paid download.

Interesting shift! Read the full article here.

Meet the Playbook

June 28th, 2011 by Screen Interaction

With the launch of the new BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet just around the corner, RIM held an inspiring seminar called ”Meet The BlackBerry PlayBook”  in association with Adobe® at the residency of TAT in Malmö, Sweden.

Screen Interaction was one of the invited companies to participate and got a first glance of the new product. Beside the design and business track seminars, we also had the chance to play around with the BlackBerry PlayBook™ tablet. (watch a video here)

Beside the 7.5″ LCD multi touch display, 1 Gb of RAM, 1 Ghz Dual-Core processor,  WiFi, Dual HD Cameras, a light weight design and long lasting battery – The BlackBerry Playbook™ was simply fun! The gesture oriented interaction design model and the raw performance in combination brought a whole new meaning to the definition of Multitasking.

From a development point of view, BlackBerry has also opened up the doors pretty wide with it’s collaboration with Adobe. Developing apps for the platform is made easy x 100. With Adobe’s deep integration to the PlayBook™ OS, apps can be made in Flex and exported as Air applications. The tablet also has an Android-player which enables Java-based applications for Android to also run on the platform.

Finally we are looking forward to the launch of the BlackBerry PlayBook™ and have already started to work on a new application concept for the PlayBook. Stay tuned for more information after the summer!

App Distribution Becomes a Global Game

June 23rd, 2011 by Screen Interaction

Distimo Publication has recently conducted a study on the global app distribution and reporting a power shift impacting the developers how to monetize their apps.

The major findings are:

-The download volume in Asian countries grew significantly in the past six months in the Apple App Store for iPhone. While other (Western) countries saw a decrease in download volume during the same time frame. China recently became the second largest market after the United States.

The download volume in South Korea is remarkably high despite the relative small size of the country’s population. Moreover, because the Games category is absent in the Apple App Store for iPhone in South Korea, all downloads are allocated to non-Games, while in other countries the Games category is without exception, the largest. This makes South Korea an especially interesting country for publishers and developers in the non-Games categories.

The download volumes in Asia increased in general, however, the proportion of paid downloads and the overall revenue still lag behind that of the United States and Europe. Moreover, while in-app purchases became an important monetization method over the last year in many countries, it has not yet in Asia. Thus, developers have to look for other ways of monetization such as advertising.

A comparison of the most popular categories between the United States and Asia revealed that there are no significant differences between content preferences. Hence, iPhone developers could offer the same type of applications in both Asia and the United States.

The majority of the most popular iPhone applications in Asia is only popular in Asia, but in some Asian countries worldwide popular applications prevail. Examples of regional popular only content are KungFu Food-Panda, and Birzzle. In general, localization appears to be key to becoming popular especially when considering countries like China, South Korea, and Japan. In countries like India and Indonesia, localization appears to be less important.

Visit to ReadSoft in Helsingborg

June 22nd, 2011 by Screen Interaction

May 17-18, 2011:
ReadSoft invited Screen Interaction to come down to their office in Helsingborg.

The challenge: to redesign one of their business solution applications – to make it more user-friendly, attractive and in-line with how we designed one of its counterparts, ReadSoft Online (an invoice processing web application tool and service).

The time ticker: 2 days.

The result: We not only managed to improve the interface and look and feel of the product, but the team (ReadSoft + S.I.) came up with a solution that combines their related business solution packages into one! This will make things a lot more efficient, practical and easier for the more common end-user.

All in all it was a successful and highly enjoyable trip. Those of us from S.I. in Stockholm reveled in the relaxed and positive environment and attitudes of our hosts and team members at ReadSoft… as well as in the quintessential sea-side charm of Helsingborg.
